They were once proud symbols of our nation, but now, on Memorial Day, these American Flags that served for so long are now put to rest.
When a flag ceases to be a fitting symbol, it needs to be destroyed and be done so in a respectful manner. We are paying special tribute to those that have fallen heroes that provided the freedom we have today.
This is really just the troop as a whole just giving back and really the community I mean we've had flags from all over so it's just a nice way to sort of remember them and give back.
Troop 188 retired over 500 flags that were used in Cleveland, Chattanooga and even from the Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Madisonville. No matter how big or small, they are all treated with respect.
We have flags of all different sizes, from flags situated on desks then we have flags that are 30 feet by 60 feet that we've come across they all hold the same significance they are all flags and they are all symbols of the nation.
Every flag retirement ceremony is a solemn occasion. You won't see the boys being typical boys, laughing and having a good time they are certainly having a good time but it's just in a different way.
The solemn ceremony also teaches the proper way to dispose of our nation's symbol.
We fold all our flags and set them up on the table back here and they carry a flag across their heart with their arms across it and give it to two different people, and they unfold it and properly place it in the fire so it can be burned and we do that for every single one.
And while flag burning is normally considered a form of protest, when respectfully done it properly ends the service of each American flag.
When others burn the flag in protest they are doing it in a disrespectful way and they are disrespecting our country but when we do it we are showing gratitude for our country and everyone that has served it.

Black Student Defends Confederate Flag
"When I look at this flag, I don't see racism. I see respect, Southern pride," 19-year-old Byron Thomas, an African-American student at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, told the Associated Press. Now, Thomas says he is considering putting the flag back up.

Guerrero gets 8-game ban In Football Match
The DFB's disciplinary commission took the decision after reviewing video images of the incident which reveal the volatile 28-year-old striker -- known as the warrior -- launching himself at goalkeeper Sven Ulreich's knees when he didn't have the ball.
Hamburg have appealed the decision.
"I am very disappointed by the verdict," said Hamburg's Danish sporting director Frank Arnesen.
"I do not excuse the foul but, compared to other fouls, I was not expecting such a heavy punishment."
If the punishment is upheld Guerrero - who has been with the club since 2006 - will only be available for the penultimate Bundesliga match of the season against Mainz which will affect his side's chances of avoiding relegation as they are only five points above it at the moment.
It is not the first time that Guerrero has received a multi-match ban as he was suspended for five games in 2010 for throwing a bottle of water at a supporter who had insulted him.

For if Peyton Manning decides to call it quits, not return to football for the 2012 season, ESPN has positioned itself perfectly to lure the Indy legend to Bristol.
If Manning wants to do TV next season, ESPN is our odds-on favorite to get him. Teams clear cap space. ESPN has cleared booth space.
Look at the other networks. Even if they wanted Manning, it would be rough, nearly impossible (especially if the suits’ lip service about loyalty ain’t a lie) to fit the Hall of Fame-bound QB into their booth.
A network would not hire a star like Manning to work regional telecasts seen by 15% of the country. If you hire Manning he must work on the No. 1 team.
Considering all the praise CBS Sports boss Sean McManus has heaped on Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, how could he now say they need Manning to make the broadcast even better? That slap in the face would be cold. The same holds true for Fox Sports boss David Hill, who is not likely to mess with his No. 1 team, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. NBC? Do Peacock suits really want to add another mouth to work with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth?
And even if any of these execs wanted to disrupt the chemical balance they have in their No. 1 NFL booths there would be resentment by the current occupants, who have huge egos, if Manning were brought in as the star.
Not at ESPN. Manning’s marquee status and buzz value are far greater than Gruden’s. Tirico and Gruden have no chemistry. They have never worked without a third wheel. Another thing to consider: Of all the NFL TV packages, ESPN’s “MNF” is the most ratings challenged, relatively speaking.
I think Manning might attract a few more eyeballs to “MNF?”
The other networks might try to sell Manning on a pregame studio show gig. Please. The Big Boy’s job, the gig with the real action and big money, is in that No. 1 broadcast booth.
