The term 'jacket' can mean more than one thing to those in the safety business. Usually it is meant to mean a florescent vest that will protect those working in high motion areas. Whether sleeveless, or with sleeves, Safety Vests can be easily worn on top of clothes, and offer a wide range of style and motion.
The main purpose of safety vests is to make the individual wearing it stand out in poor visibility. They are usually colored in bright, neon colors, with reflective strips on both the front and the back.
Safety Vests will not only make the wearer much more visible under dark and dangerous conditions, but it will identify them as one of those authorized to assist in disaster management making them more accessible to those in need. It is also required by law in many places to wear these vests, especially if you are in the police, firefighter, emergency medical, and construction fields.
Even if you are not required to wear safety vests, if you are motorcycle or bicycle rider- or even a pedestrian in a high traffic area, you could benefit from wearing one of these as well. These jackets will often make you instantly visible at night, even during the harshest of weather.
This type of clothing is made according to very exact safety standards. The material used is typically polyester and/or PVC in order to make it waterproof and some vests are even heat resistant as in the case of firefighters. Velcro is the preferred method of attachment, since this will have less of a chance of getting caught on something, and will make it easier to remove if the wearer finds himself in an emergency medical situation.
