Olympic Champion Fabris Retires After Bad Start To Season
BRUSSELS — Double Olympic champion Enrico Fabris, who became Italy's unlikely hero at the 2006 Turin Winter Games, has retired after a bad start to the speedskating season.
With Americans Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick poised to rake in the medal at the 2006 games, it was Fabris who rode the enthusiasm of the home crowd to win gold in the 1,500 meters and team pursuit and bronze in the 5,000 to upstage everyone at the Lingotto oval.
However, he never came close to matching those results again and his coach Gianni Romme said Monday the 30-year old Fabris had been struggling with motivation. Fabris had been deeply disappointed when he finished 24th and last in the 1,500 of the opening World Cup race in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Friday.
"His motivation was shot. It didn’t happen in one day. It was a long process," Romme told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Almaty, Kazakhstan.
At his best, Fabris was one of the finest technicians around. Tucked low and steadfast, he would glide over the ice where others plowed, and had an uncanny knack to maintain the same pace throughout a race.
He brought all those skills together within two magical weeks in Turin.
“As an athlete, you cannot do any better than to peak at the Olympics. He got as much out of his career as possible,” Romme said.
But in five years of trying, he could never reach the same kind of peak again.
Slowed by injuries, he sought another peak at the Vancouver Games last year but they turned into bitter disappointment when he finished without a medal.
While they only compete during the winter, skaters have to stay in shape all year and it became increasingly difficult to put in the hours of physical exercise, Romme said.
"He simply said 'I don't want this anymore. I want to be able to lead my own life,'" Romme said.
He joined the national police force in 2003 and Romme expected him to start work there.

In side profile, a recurring 3 Series wedge is even more pronounced than in the previous version. Taut surfaces are accented by a double character line accenting the car's flanks. The new 3 Series also retains a characteristically BMW “Hofmeister kink” at the base of the car's C-pillar. Nearby, a fine contour line from the roof pillars gives the roof a lighter, lower appearance. In all, the exterior design is fresh, but still clearly discernable as a BMW—and a 3 Series.
It is a larger 3 Series, in fact. Front and rear tracks grow by 1.5 and 1.9 in., respectively. Overall length is 3.7 in. greater; wheelbase accounts for part of this, up by 2.0 in. Despite the larger size—and proof of exemplary engineering—the new 3 Series is 88 lb. lighter than a comparably equipped car it replaces.

Government has reiterated its support to sport, but quickly warned that they will not be funding Zifa activities if they were not satisfied that proper development, starting from the grassroots, was being implemented.
The Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture have already pledged to do more for sport but said they will not simply accept requests from the mother body to play international matches without adequate preparations and continue to embarrass the nation.
These remarks were made by the Principal Director of the parent ministry, Paul Damasane, at the official opening of the Women's Football Com Unity Seminar which started in the capital yesterday.
The three-day seminar seeks to bring more awareness of the sport to the stakeholders and the community.
Damasane said there was need for the national teams to have adequate preparations starting from grassroots and not become tournament teams.
The Government will support but on our conditions. Development and preparedness take precedence over just fulfilling a tournament.
"We are not just going there to spend the taxpayers money and come back with nothing to show. We are not going to accept Zifa requests, when there are no preparations, to sponsor a team to a tournament," said Damasane.
Damasane also called for viable leagues from grassroots that will see schools playing football throughout the year.
"We need to change on our school calendar so that sport is engaged right throughout the year and not only in second term where ball games are engaged but teams will practise from February to December, not periodically or seasonally
"We should involve girls from schools, colleges and tertiary.
"We need to also to look for a sports policy that pushes for inclusive sport, we want to see sport for people with disability."
Fifa development officer based in Botswana, Florie Ramogodi, said the seminar was meant to map the way forward in the development of women's football.
"We are looking at ways of how to develop women's football. We have 53 countries in Africa but at the World Cup we had only two countries and maybe there is something we are doing wrong.
"We are gathered here to look at what we have been doing wrong and what we can do to improve the situation," said Ramogodi.
Women's football chairperson, Mavis Gumbo, said they were grateful to Fifa for letting Zimbabwe host the seminar, as it will go a long way in the development of the game.
In the afternoon sessions, various presenters from Fifa, local women's league, Sports Commission and the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee also took the delegates through their presentations on the current state of women's football in Zimbabwe, how it can be improved and what Government has done for local sport.
Fifa instructor and Namibia Women's Soccer coach, Jacqueline Shipanga, also presented a paper on how her country developed football starting from grassroots.
Today, veteran South African football analyst, who is also a Fifa instructor, Chris Bongo, will present a paper on communication while local media personnel will also present papers on the Zimbabwe media and women's soccer.

Terminally ill cabbie has his body mummified for documentary
The late taxi driver Alan Billis has become the first man to be mummified in the style of the ancient Egyptians for at least 3,000 years.Using the techniques that preserved Tutankhamun’s body after his death in 1323BC, scientists embalmed the 61-year-old following his death from lung cancer.
Over a period of several months following his death in January, Mr Billis’s internal organs were removed and kept in jars, with the exception of his brain and heart.
His skin was covered in a mixture of oils and resins and bathed in a solution of Natron, a salt found in dried-up river beds in Egypt.
After a month in a glass tank at the Medico-Legal Centre in Sheffield, which houses the city’s mortuary, his body was taken out, placed in a drying chamber and wrapped in linen.
Mr Billis, who loved watching documentaries, agreed to have his body preserved after seeing an advertisement from a television company looking to film the process.
Mrs Billis and the couple’s three grown-up children gave his decision their blessing, and the resulting programme – Mummifying Alan: Egypt’s Last Secret – was screened on Channel 4 last night.
Taxi driver Mr Billis, who has been dubbed Torquay’s Tutankhamun, explained his unusual decision in the documentary, saying: “People have been leaving their bodies to science for years, and if people don’t volunteer for anything nothing gets found out.”
Dr Stephen Buckley of the University of York, who helped research Egyptian mummification techniques before the programme, said Mr Billis’s body could now last several millennia.
